PEP for emergency help after exposure to HIV
WHAT IS PEP
PEP is anti-HIV medication that is highly effective in stopping HIV infection if you have been exposed to virus. It is used predominantly by person exposed to HIV during sexual act. There is a few rules you need to understand if you want to take PEP:
- PEP must be taken as soon as possible – it losing effectiveness after 72 hours from infection; therefore earlier it’s taken, the more effectively it works
- you must make HIV test or viral load test to determine your HIV status
- you must take full dose of PEP for 28 days and after that make another HIV test to confirm that your HIV status is non-reactive
WHO SHOULD USE PEP
PEP can be taken by any person that is HIV negative and has been exposed to HIV infection:
- have unprotected sex – anal and/or vaginal – with person of unknown HIV status or with HIV positive person with detectable HIV status
- have sex – anal and/or vaginal – with person of unknown HIV status or with HIV positive person with detectable HIV status during which condom broke
- you shared a needle with HIV positive person or with person of unknown HIV status
- you have been sexually assaulted

PEP in Bali Medika is combination of two drugs given as oral treatment: Dolutegravir + Lamivudine + Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate (one pill dose or combination of pills).
